2013 Asbury University
Draft Horse Day
The 5th Annual Draft Horse Day was held at
Asbury University's Equine Center in Wilmore, Kentucky on Saturday 21, 2013. Overnight there had been
an inch of rain and the morning dawned cloudy and overcast. Because of the weather, the only teams that
were present were the two teams brought by Mike Downs. However, the decision was made to go ahead with
the planned event as the forecast was for everything to clear up by noon. The morning activities included an
opening ceremony followed by an obstacle course along with face painting and horse rides for the youngsters.
Because of the weather, the opening ceremony and obstacle course were held in the covered arena.
By lunch time, the sun was starting to pop through and the public really started to turn out. The Jessamine County
Beef Cattle Association was cooking hamburgers and hot dogs and the crowd was invited to eat in the arena where
the Asbury Vaulting Team, Hunt Club and Mounted Police program were putting on demonstrations of their programs
and the training methods they use to train service animals. Once these student demonstrations were completed,
everyone was invited out to the Mission Garden area for demonstrations of plowing and mowing. Although the weather
may have caused the early crowd to be rather small, the number of folks who came out later in the day made the event
a big success.
