2013 Jim Stevens Birthday Ride
Over the weekend of August 2-4, 2013 the members of the Southern Indiana Draft Horse and Mule Association gathered at the farm of Jim Stevens,
the "Grand Poobah" Emeritus of the club, for a weekend wagon ride and to celebrate the 80th birthday of Bob Pfeifer along with Jim's birthday
which was later in the week. Most members arrived on Friday afternoon and evening and it didn't take long for the ribbing and the lying to
Saturday began early with a group breakfast. After eating, the group harnessed up and had 14 wagons and carts ready to hit the road by about 9AM.
The skies were overcast for much of the morning with occasional periods of sunshine. While the weather forecast predicted a chance of rain, it
stayed dry the entire day and the skies pretty well cleared up in mid-afternoon. We rode south over mainly gravel and dirt county roads and had permission
to lunch right on the banks of the Ohio River in a privately owned little park area adjacent to some corn fields. We did have a few exciting minutes
during the day which you will see as you look at the photos of the ride. When we returned to Jim's farm in the afternoon, the boards were set up
and we had a cornhole tournament that went until well after dark. We took a nice long break to enjoy a great dinner and then the tournament resumed.
The finals were held with the players pitching in minimal light under the stars. As always, I think that everyone who was there had a really great time.
Sunday started with a beautiful clear blue sky and another really fine group breakfast. Although a few folks had to leave and a couple of teams were
given the day off to rest, we still had 10 wagons and carts ready to ride by 9AM. This time, Jim lead us west and we wound up having lunch on a farm of one of his
relatives. Again, the place was like a little park with lots of shade and plenty of room. Unlike Saturday, we had no problems at all and just really
enjoyed the riding and the camaraderie.
NOTE: Starting with this event, I am again adding comments to some of the photos before I post them. I have been told by several friends that they enjoyed the photos
more in the past when I took the extra time to add comments. By doing this, I can also tell a little bit more about what happened throughout the event without
trying to include everything here in the write-up. If you like this feature, let me know.
