Each year Keeneland Race Track holds 4 major
auction sales of Thoroughbred horses. They are held in January, April,
September and November. Top thoroughbred breeders, trainers, owners and
prospective owners come from all over the world to attend the sales. The
amount of money that changes hands during these events is amazing with top
prospects selling for hundreds of thousands of dollars and, occasionally for
millions of dollars. Our good friend Homer Rader who is the Farm Manager
Columbiana Farm in Paris, Kentucky had two of his client's horses entered in
the November sale. They were scheduled to sell on Friday, November 9,
2012. He suggested that I come down to see some of the sale and to take a
few photos of the horses he had entered. I have attached a small group of photos to this page
that were taken around the grounds at the sale. They include photos of the
horses Homer had consigned and also of a new farm intern named Takuya who had
just arrived from Japan the previous Friday. Purely by coincidence, while
wandering the grounds I had taken a few shots of a pregnant mare that was being
walked and prepared for the sale ring. A few minutes later that
mare, whose name was Pure Clan (hip #279), went on the block and was the top
seller for day 2 of the sale. She brought a staggering $4,500,000.
Once she was sold, I was able to capture a few more photos of her as she
was led from the sale ring and have included them in the attached photos.
This is what $4,500,000
worth of horse flesh looks like!
