2012 Burton's Memorial Day Ride

Jeff and Penny Burton hosted the members of the Community Draft Horse and Mule Association for a Memorial Day weekend wagon ride in Mason County at Jeff's brother's cattle operation near Mayslick, Kentucky. The weather co-operated for the second weekend in a row as it was sunny and dry with no chance of rain.  It was very hot and many farms in the area were in the process of completing their first cutting of hay for the year.  We had 8 units and 4 outriders and covered about 15 miles on Saturday.  The most exciting part of the day was when we were passed by about 100 motorcycles,  Fortunately, all of the horses and mules handled the situation fine and no problems developed.  After completing our Saturday ride, Jeff and Penny had prepared a beef brisket and pork loin dinner with everyone contributing a side dish or desert to the meal. We were joined at dinner by Jeff's dad and also by Sam and  Barb Cooper. Everyone was glad to see Sammy up and about after the recent broken back he had suffered in a riding accident. After dinner, Jeff and my friend David Trusty who was visiting from Mississippi took the opportunity to strum a few tunes for all of us on the mandolin and the guitar.

Sunday's ride was shorter, but the weather was still great and it was another perfect day.  Jeff had a flat tire and a few of the young men lifted his wagon so he could mount his spare.  We stopped for ice cream at a convenience store in the town of Mayslick. There was a metal drain across the driveway that many of the teams hesitated to cross so several of the teamsters took the opportunity to make several training passes across that drain before we returned to camp to end the weekend.

It doesn't get much better than this!
