2012 World Horseshoeing Classic

Over the weekend of February 24-26, the World Champion Blacksmiths (WCB) organization again held their World Horseshoeing Classic at the Kentucky Horseshoeing School in Richmond Kentucky.  There were 13 teams with 4 farriers per team competing for the $10,000 first place prize this year.  Last year's winners from Wales in Great Britain came the furthest distance to compete.

The contest lasted three days with different types of shoeing required each day.  There were three separate 2 hour and 30 minute heats per day with 4 or 5 teams competing in each heat until all 13 teams had competed their competition for that day.  The process was for each team member to identify to the 3 judges which of the horse's hoofs was to be their responsibility.  They are provided with pieces of steel bar stock and each member of the team had to trim the hoof, build a horseshoe to fit their assigned hoof, and finally, fit and nail the shoe onto the hoof.  The horses to be shod are locally provided and are randomly assigned to each team.

The event is judged using a 3 judge system and the judges (in white lab coats) examine the progress at several predetermined points along the way. There is the constant sound of loud rock music along with the clanging and banging of hammers of all sizes beating the steel bars into horseshoes on the anvils provided for the competitors by WCB.  You will see as you view the photos from this event, there is a constant frenzy of movement by the competitors as they scramble to get their assigned horse shod in the allotted time.  That frenzy of activity really increases during the last 30 minutes of each heat as company CEO, Craig Trnka is on the PA system constantly reminding the competitors of the amount of time they have remaining in that heat to complete their task.  Craig is a natural entertainer and managed to keep everyone entertained throughout the day in his role as the "head honcho."    He is a great spokesman for the organization.  On Friday morning, the Horse Radio Network's internet radio show "Horses in the Morning" was being broadcast live from the school's lobby right outside the area where the contest was being held.  Click here for a flyer listing some of the particulars from this event. (Note: Paul Duddy was unable to attend and was replaced as a judge by Mitch Taylor, the owner of the Kentucky Horseshoeing School.)  Congratulations to the WCB team for winning this event!
