2012 Southern Indiana Draft Horse and Mule
Annual Fall Wagon Train
This year, the Southern Indiana Draft Horse
and Mule Association (SIDHMA) decided to try something new for their annual Fall
wagon train held from September 8th through September 16th. Instead of the
usual routine of moving from place to place each day as they followed various
back country roads throughout southern Indiana and north central Kentucky, the
group decided to set up camp at the farm of one of their members,
Dexter Marsch, and to conduct daily wagon rides on the many backroads in the area of his farm
near Hawesville, Kentucky.
The initial plan was to move to another farm on Wednesday of the week and return
back to Dexter's on Friday evening. However, things went so well at
Dexter's place that the decision was made early in the week to just remain
camped there for the entire period. The weather was gorgeous all week with
very comfortable temperatures and no rain except on the Friday night before the
ride started and some light showers on the last day as everyone was preparing to
go home. Dexter and his family were great hosts even to the extent of providing
the group with hot biscuits for breakfast each morning. A few riders who had
other matters to attend to came and went during the week, but there were 7
to 10 wagons on each day's ride along with a like number of outriders. I
took in excess of 4,000 photos over the entire 9 days, but you will note that
the number of photos displayed here for each day decreases as the week goes on.
Quite frankly, many of the photos of wagons on the road taken later in the week
look very similar to those taken earlier in the week and we don't want to bore
our website visitors with a lot of repetition. A "Slideshow" DVD or CD
with all of the photos displayed here on the site for this event is
available for $39 including shipping. Click
