2012 National Plowing Contest

After a couple of months of very dry drought conditions, hurricane Issac choose the September 1st and 2nd Labor Day weekend to arrive in the Dayton, Ohio area and provide some much needed rain.  Unfortunately, that was the same weekend as the 2012 National Plowing Contest was being held at the Carriage Hill Farm MetroPark facility in Huber Heights just north of Dayton.  Contestants had come from several different states and included one 6 horse hitch of gray Percherons from North Carolina and another 6 of Belgians from Michigan.  The good news for everyone attending was that the rain held off during the daytime and both the Saturday practice and the actual Sunday contest were able to be held with a minimum of disruption.  The ground used for the contest had been worked earlier in the year to improve the condition of the soil compared to prior years. That fact combined with a 3 inch rainstorm on Saturday night made for some muddy conditions on Sunday, but it was not enough to hinder the competitors.  A lot of congratulations and thanks has to go to Jim Butcher, the park itself, and to the crew of volunteers who did that work earlier in the summer along with their hard work over this weekend to put on a truly first class event.  Every competitor was treated with respect and dignity regardless of where they placed in the competition. Lets do whatever it takes to ensure that this fun event continues in the future.

These horses traveled up from North Carolina in a tractor trailer truck along with a 7th horse and 4 mules.
